Let’s chat about closing the gap

Aboriginal health is everybody’s business. To make meaningful change for our patients and the broader community, we must work together and support each other to achieve equity and equality for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

So, save the date for a yarn with our Aboriginal Health and Engagement team on this year’s National Close the Gap Day, Thursday 20 March.

Close the Gap Day is a national day of action to address the disparity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous people in a range of health and socioeconomic outcomes. Held on the third Thursday of March each year, it is an annual reminder that everyone can take meaningful action to work towards achieving health equality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia by 2030.

All Australian governments are working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their communities, organisations and businesses to implement the National Agreement on Closing the Gap (The National Agreement) at the national, state and territory, and local levels. The National Agreement marks a shift in the approach to the Closing the Gap Strategy, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples determining what is important to them.

Currently, 4 of the 17 targets of the National Agreement are on track to meet the goals outlined by 2030. However, there are socio-economic areas worsening for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, such as the developmental track assessed of children commencing school, the number of adults in prison, social and emotional wellbeing, and the number of children in out-of-home care.

If you’re at the Clayton campus on 20 March and would like to learn more on where you can help close the gap, be sure to swing by the Aboriginal Health and Engagement team’s stall. Everyone is welcome to join in whatever capacity; have a yarn and get to know an Aboriginal Health and Engagement team member, ask questions, collect free resources or pick up a delicious cookie made with native Australian ingredients by an Aboriginal organisation.
