Why volunteer at Monash Health?
Monash Health has a long history of engaging volunteer services dating back to the 1850s. Every day across Monash Health, volunteers play a vital role in supporting staff, visitors, patients, families, and carers during what can be the most challenging of circumstances.
Whilst traditionally volunteering has been conceived of in terms of workforce support, a way to ‘give back’ or a means of providing career experience, more recently volunteers in healthcare have been viewed as having a significant role to play in improving patient and staff experience. As such, Monash Health volunteers are considered integral in supporting a strategic approach to improving patient care and experience outcomes.

Volunteer opportunities exist across Monash Health Hospitals and Community sites, with a focus on activities that supplement the care and treatment of patients and support patients, visitors, and employees.
Visiting volunteer groups
The Monash Health volunteer program is enhanced by the commitment of a number of visiting volunteers groups and their committed volunteers. All visiting volunteer enquiries should be directed to the Manager, Monash Health Volunteer Services via email: volunteers@monashhealth.org
We do not offer
- Short-term organisational volunteering – organisations interested in such activity should contact Monash Health Foundation
- Work experience, transition, or placement requests – candidates seeking work experience should contact Monash Health People and Culture
- Pet Therapy volunteering – coordinated by registered organisations (e.g. Lort Smith, Delta Dogs); applicants interested should contact these organisations directly.

Who can volunteer?

All Monash Health volunteers must be over the age of 18 years.
What is expected of Monash Health volunteers?
All volunteers at Monash Health must:
- demonstrate Monash Health’s values at all times
- adhere to Monash Health policy, procedure and training requirements
- be punctual and reliable
- respect the confidentiality and privacy of patients and their families
- respect cultural differences
- work cooperatively with staff and act as part of a team
- wear hospital identification while on duty
- wear appropriate clothing or uniform
- maintain standards of safety and infection control (Wearing appropriate PPE is required including N95 masks)
Where can I volunteer?
The Monash Health volunteer program operates across six hospital sites (including the Monash Children’s Hospital, Monash Medical Centre, Dandenong Hospital, Casey Hospital, Moorabbin Hospital and Kingston Centre) and Monash Health Community facilities.
What support is given to me as a volunteer?
All Monash Health volunteers are provided with formal induction, orientation, and training. Volunteers work under the supervision of a paid staff member/s when on a rostered shift and ongoing training and development opportunities are available. Monash Health Volunteer Coordinators are also available to provide ongoing support and assistance.
How do I apply to be a volunteer?

What does the application process involve?
Applicants will be required to attend an interview held at one of the Monash Health sites. Should your application be successful, you will be required to:
- Provide a police check clear of any criminal history of violence, drug offenses, sex offenses or crimes against children, apply for a WWC and where necessary, sign a statutory declaration
- Have up-to-date vaccinations
Attend a local induction and orientation - Complete all required mandatory training prior to commencement and as required on an annual basis
