ICU of the Future

We are designing an ICU of the Future – and we need your help

All funds raised will support an ICU of the Future — one designed to help patients not only survive, but thrive.

With up to half of all Australians likely to need ICU care in their lifetime, and as many as half of those patients developing delirium, which increases the risk of death after discharge, your support will help us create state-of – the art, calming rooms that give patients the best possible experience”.

Associate Professor Tim Leong – Program Medical Director Emergency and Intensive Care.

Intensive Care Units across the globe deliver exceptional, life-saving care. ICU’s are incredible. 90% of patients who enter the ICU will go home which is remarkable.

However, Intensive Care Units can be daunting places for patients and their families with up to 75 per cent of ICU patients globally experience anxiety, depression, or other physical, cognitive, or psychological problems. While the quality of care provided and survival rates in Australian ICUs are exceptional, the quality of a patient’s life post-discharge can be suboptimal.

The Solution
We have an opportunity to build a state-of-the-art Monash Health ICU – improving patient outcomes, patient and family experience and staff experience.

This will be a first for an ICU in the state of Victoria.

We are building a modern ICU within the new Monash Medical Centre tower which will be ready to receive patients in 2029.

With your support, we aim to purpose-build up to 10 of these rooms with enhanced features to reduce delirium such as:

  1. Enhanced noise reduction – through smart patient monitoring and life support equipment that can divert alarms to central stations – reducing impact at the patient bedside
  2. Optimising lighting to provide a more circadian-effective program- syncing with patient biological rhythms
  3. Considered technology to optimise communication between patients and families – better connecting patient and families

Please note: final features may change through project design

Why Now?

Monash Medical Centre in Clayton – the largest hospital within the Monash Health service is expanding, with a seven-story tower to be built above the newly expanded emergency department.

The tower will be home to a new operating theatre complex with pre- and post-operative beds, expanded maternity services including new birthing suites and a new intensive care unit to care for the sickest patients.

Delivering healthcare to over a quarter of the state’s population, the expansion will be delivered in partnership with the Victorian Health Building Authority and the Victorian State Government.

There is an opportunity through your generous support to enhance this ICU experience and establish a first in Victoria through purpose building up to10 beds of the new ICU to these state of the art designs

Early works commenced in June 2025, with the project expected to be completed in 2029.
