Meet Monash Children’s Vascular Anomalies Multidisciplinary Team
At Monash Health, we are proud to have a Vascular Anomalies Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) at Monash Children’s Hospital, which combines expertise and resources from across the organisation to offer effective, coordinated care to patients with vascular anomalies. In Australia, there is a limited number of facilities which can provide comprehensive treatment and Monash Children’s Hospital offers one of the largest multidisciplinary teams in the country. The team of specialists work collaboratively to provide accurate diagnosis, individualised treatment plans and ongoing care for children with vascular anomalies.
Vascular anomalies occur when arteries, veins, capillaries or lymphatic vessels do not develop properly. Many of these anomalies present at birth, and can, at times, be diagnosed during pregnancy. They vary in size, colour, location and associate symptoms, which make them a complex medical condition.
The team is made up of providers and consultants who, together, boast a wide range of expertise. Each person brings a unique set of skills and knowledge to the service. The Team includes professionals from the following areas:
- Paediatric general surgery
- Plastic surgery
- Interventional radiology
- General paediatrics
- ENT surgery
- Neurosurgery
- Radiology
- Nursing
- Anaesthesia
- Paediatric Intensive Care
- Neonatal Intensive Care
The Vascular Anomalies MDT was developed from collaboration within the paediatric teams at Monash Children’s Hospital. This collaboration demonstrated the need for a new service that supported the overall needs of the patient and provided coordinated care. Monash Health cares for patients of any age, from the antenatal period to late in life. This means the team can transition paediatric patients into the adult service and this capability provides a unique service in Victoria.
