About us

Monash Audiology provides diagnostic and rehabilitation services to patients of all ages.

We accept:

  • Internal referrals for Monash Health public patients
  • External referrals from doctors, other health providers and self-referrals. External referrals are seen as private, fee-paying patients.

All referrals are triaged by an audiologist.

Internal referrals

Eligibility

  • Patients consulted in Monash Health public outpatient clinics and those discharged from an inpatient stay can be seen at our services as public patients.
  • Referrals are accepted from all Monash Health Programs, medical, nursing or allied health staff.

Making a referral

Outpatients

  • Submit an internal referral via SMR
  • Specialty Unit = Audiology (Shaani Graves)
  • Site = Clayton
  • Priority = as appropriate

Inpatients

  • Place an Order
  • Referral to Audiology (Initial)

Please provide relevant developmental or medical status, e.g. autism, developmental delay, so that we can triage the referral accurately and provide the right service.

Important to know

  • External patients are billed and rebated through Medicare.
  • There is an out-of-pocket cost for all patients other than those having evoked potentials testing, who are bulk-billed.
  • A doctor’s referral will reduce the out-of-pocket cost, but is not essential.
  • External referrals are accepted at Monash Medical Centre, Moorabbin Hospital and Cranbourne Centre.

Services offered

Monash Audiology provides:

  • diagnostic assessment for adults, children and infants
  • rehabilitation services for adults and children

Diagnostic

  • Pure tone audiometry (including visual reinforcement audiometry and play audiometry)
  • Speech audiometry
  • Impedance audiometry (middle ear function)
  • Auditory evoked potentials (threshold and site of lesion)
    • Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
    • Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR)
    • Cortical Evoked Response Audiometry (CERA)
    • Testing under sedation or anaesthetic (MCH only)
  • Otoacoustic emissions (OAE, cochlear function)
  • Educational Audiology Assessment (minimum age 7 years, self-funded only)

Rehabilitation

  • Hearing aids (self-funded i.e. not Hearing Services Program)
  • Bone conduction devices (in conjunction with ENT – refer to Complex Otology Clinic)
  • Cochlear implants
  • Assistive listening devices
    • loan for inpatients
    • purchase in conjunction with Educational Audiology Assessment
  • Ear plugs
    • Swimmer’s ear plugs pre-moulded or custom-made
    • Custom-made noise and musicians ear plugs

Services not offered

  • Infant hearing screening – done by Victorian Infant Hearing Screening Program VIHSP
  • Vestibular testing – refer to Alfred Health, RVEEH, University of Melbourne Audiology Clinic or Barwon Health
  • Electrocochleography
  • Cochlear implants – refer to RVEEH Cochlear Implant Clinic
  • Adult hearing aids through the Hearing Services Program (pensioner/veteran) apply via this link: https://www.hearingservices.gov.au/wps/portal/hso/site/application/
  • Paediatric hearing aids (infants, children and young adults under 26) who are eligible through Hearing Australian
  • General hearing aid repairs – the patient or patient’s family should organise this via their original hearing aid provider

Expertise and quality

Audiologists at Monash Health provide primary hearing health care, specialising in the prevention of hearing loss and in the identification, assessment, diagnosis, management, and treatment of hearing disorders.

Our audiologists are university graduates who have extensive specialist training at post-graduate level and are skilled in paediatric and adult diagnostic assessment and rehabilitation. They are all accredited members of Audiology Australia and participate in its continuing professional development program or clinical graduate internship.

Monash Audiology services are also subject to the quality assurance program of Monash Children’s Hospital as part of Monash Health, including test protocols and peer review of performance.
