WATCH: Monash Children’s Hospital is easing MRI anxiety with virtual reality magic

Monash Children’s Hospital is utilising virtual reality technology, the Smileyscope, to take the stress out of medical procedures for our young patients.

The Smileyscope was initially developed to help children while getting needles by sending them on interactive adventures to distract and comfort them.

Jeff Chen, Monash Children’s MRI Supervisor, has started incorporating the Smileyscope VR goggles within the imaging department at Monash Children’s Hospital before MRI scans.

9-year-old Monash Children’s Hospital patient Sara has used the VR headset to help ease her anxiety during the regular imaging procedures she receives to manage a genetic disorder.

The technology works to familiarise children with the sounds of the MRI machine while allowing them to play games to practice being still before they have their scan.

Monash Children’s Hospital was recently featured on Nine News, sharing how the technology has assisted our young patients to prepare and become more comfortable for their imaging procedures.

Jeff and Sara demonstrated how the Smileyscope has helped to ease her worries during her procedures at Monash Children’s Hospital.
