VIDEO: “If I could give you a big hug, I would.” Patient delivers heartfelt message to Monash Health Nurse on ABC News Breakfast

This morning, ABC News Breakfast spoke to Michael, a former COVID-19 patient at Monash Medical Centre.

Michael was in our care for a total of 72 days, with 14 of those spent in ICU.

As a result of his diagnosis, he was unable to sit, stand or walk but now having fully recovered, took a moment to express his thanks to the nursing staff and in particular, Nurse Manager Radhika John for her hard work and compassion during what was an incredibly difficult time.

“When I got moved to the ICU from the ward, I was very weak. Radhika’s team helped feed me because I couldn’t even hold a spoon. She would come and check in on me and sometimes buy me coffee.”

“I had very limited contact in hospital and those little expressions of kindness I really treasured. On my last day, the whole nursing team, including Radhika, were lined up in the hallway – they clapped their hands as I was being moved out. I will never forget that.”

Radhika was also interviewed as part of the segment, returning the thanks to Michael for his kind words.

“It’s a privilege to have looked after Michael and many of our patients throughout our journey with COVID. Of course, it was not only myself, it was a real team effort.”

She also shared with the presenters the powerful advice she received from one of her mentors.

“One of the most important lessons I was told by my mentors is that people will forget what you do but they will never forget how you made them feel.”

We would like to extend our thanks to all our nurses who are working tirelessly to provide critical care to our COVID-19 patients.
