Mystery solved: A happy reunion between the parents of a child was born on the doorstep of Monash Medical Centre, and the kind passerby who stopped and took the shirt off her back to help.
‘Baby comes when baby’s ready,’ goes the saying.
To the surprise of new parents Lucy and Fred, their daughter Zelda arrived on Monash Medical Centre’s doorstep!
Her appearance in the early hours of Father’s Day made Fred a proud father of two.
Lucy gave birth minutes after arriving at the hospital, while Fred was finding her a wheelchair.
Another new mum, Charley, was passing by and provided support until staff from the Emergency Department arrived.
‘She was so quick to jump to helping Lucy out. She did an amazing job,’ said midwife Anna Wilson.
Having laboured at home for some time, the expectant couple had called ahead to tell midwives they were heading in.
‘We were preparing the room for her and getting all of the nice lights and smells going and then lo and behold we hear Code Pink on the loudspeaker. Code Pink means delivery outside of the birth suites. We rushed down and there she was with a little baby girl!’ said Anna.
Reflecting on their daughter’s birth, Lucy and Fred smile.
‘In hindsight, perhaps we should have called an ambulance. But we made it – we were at the hospital, just not inside!’ said Lucy.
Mum and bub are now home, happy and healthy.
The stranger who gently lent a hand that day didn’t get the couple’s names or contact details. Keen to see how they were doing, she took to social media to inquire about them.
A network of mums put them in touch, and a joyful reunion followed, which was captured by Ten News+.
Zelda’s remarkable arrival, caught on CCTV, will undoubtedly make a compelling story when she celebrates her 21st birthday!
