1 in 5 women will have a stroke

Let’s not make it a guessing game. Your donation today can help make early detection possible.

All funds raised through this appeal will support the purchase of a specialised Electromyography (EMG) machine which can measure variability in heart rate and blood pressure. This could significantly enhance stroke care in women, especially pregnant women who are at higher risk of stroke compared to women of the same age.

Monash Health is launching a national first – Stroke in Women Service for women who are at high risk for stroke, especially during pregnancy and post-partum.

Monash Health has the largest stroke treatment and rehabilitation service in Australia. The clinic is a global first as Monash Health is uniquely placed as one of the few healthcare agencies with maternity, newborn and stroke services.

With an estimated 7.7 – 15% of all maternal deaths world-wide caused by stroke, this is a much needed area and, a significant service gap, where there is little specialised support nor expertise.

The number of women, particularly pregnant women, who Monash Health care for with stroke is increasing all the time.

  • This clinic will also see pregnant patients who are high risk for stroke (e.g. 31% of pregnancy related stroke occurred in patients with hypertension)
  • Hypertension in pregnancy is a serious, modifiable risk factor for stroke
  • Due to high blood pressure during pregnancy, pregnant women are more likely to have additional symptoms from stroke, including nausea, loss of consciousness or appearing confused
  • 30-50% surviving women are left with permanent neurological damage
  • The most common types of disability after stroke are impaired speech, restricted physical abilities, weakness or paralysis of limbs on one side of the body, difficulty gripping or holding things, and a slowed ability to communicate
  • The incidence of pregnancy related stroke is increasing due to advancing maternal age, gestational diabetes, hypertension
