Monash Health’s Urology team are resting their legs after collectively riding a virtual 1000 km in their 2021 ‘Pump the Pedals for Prostate Cancer’ fundraiser.
Held on Friday 3 December and Saturday 4 December at Casey Hospital, the event involved teams riding in relay virtually from Melbourne to Sydney using stationary bikes and Zwift technology.
AFL commentators Brian ‘BT’ Taylor and Mark ‘Sellers’ Maclure helped kick off the event.
Special guests included Mark Flavell, who shared his experience with prostate cancer and John Maloney, a survivor of prostate cancer. John, 80, rode his own stationary bike 200 km, at 5 km per day, in the lead-up to the event. John’s daughter Janine Maloney is Nurse Manager and Clinical Service Lead, 3A Forest COVID at Monash Children’s Hospital.
Monash Health’s Director of Urology, Mr Scott Donnellan was pleased with the event and the fundraising result of more than $50,000.
“Thank you to all involved this year including our sponsors, donors and the riding teams from Urology and Anaesthetics,” Scott said.
“Funds raised this year will be used to expand the Monash Health prostate cancer biopsy service to decrease waiting times for men while they wait to learn of their diagnosis,” he said.
“Raising awareness about early diagnosis of prostate cancer has become increasingly important during the pandemic, with recent reports that men are delaying testing and treatment.”
