From home care to health research: Mildred Allen’s clinical trial journey

Meet our clinical trial champion: Mildred.
Having previously worked in community care, supporting people in their homes, she is continuing that commitment in a different way by taking part in clinical research at Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH).
Mildred recently enrolled in her fourth clinical trial, a journey that began after a heart attack and severely high triglyceride levels left her at increased risk of another cardiac event and acute pancreatitis.
‘I wanted to know more about what a clinical trial involved,’ Mildred said. ‘Once everything was explained to me, I decided to take part.’
After joining the trial for people with severely high triglyceride levels in 2021, Mildred responded well to treatment and later moved into an extension study. As her health needs evolved, she joined further trials focused on cholesterol management and, most recently, hypertension or high blood pressure.
For Mildred, participating in clinical research has provided more than access to innovative treatments.
‘Doing this has been the best thing for me,’ she said. ‘I’ve learned so much about my medications, my blood test results and what I can do to improve my health.’
Her commitment to research continued even after she was injured in a serious car accident. With support from the clinical trials team, including transport assistance and mobility support, she was able to continue attending appointments throughout her recovery.
‘Mrs Allen is one of the most selfless people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing,’ said Debra O’Leary, Clinical Trials and Research Manager at VHH.
‘She is always thinking about how her participation might help other people in the future.’
Clinical trials are essential to improving healthcare, helping researchers evaluate new treatments, devices and approaches to care.
Yet women continue to be underrepresented in many clinical studies, which makes the contribution of patients like Mildred all the more meaningful.
Mildred hopes her story will encourage others to consider taking part.
‘Even if I help one person, it’s worth it,’ she said. ‘I’m giving of myself to help other people in need. Everyone should do it.’
