Book Week at Monash Children’s Hospital a ‘Symphony of Stories’
Books, costumes, butterflies and music transformed Monash Children’s Hospital into a colourful celebration of Children’s Book Week.
Children met characters from much-loved books including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Magic Faraway Tree, Where’s Wally?, Little Red Riding Hood, Dear Zoo, The Day the Crayons Quit, and the Little Miss and Mr Men series.
Craft stations were inspired by books shortlisted for the 2026 Book of the Year Awards, including Derek and Frogs are our Friends. Children and families could also visit a live butterfly enclosure, join book-themed activities, and have their faces painted. With support from Monash Health Foundation, children could choose a free book and costume to take home.
‘Book Week’s a very special week, it’s inspiring. Books are empowering, they’re magical,’ said Colin Dobson, Principal of Monash Children’s Hospital School.
Creating Book Week memories
With her guitar, Year 12 music student Myah Jaide Armour led a nursery rhyme sing-along and performed songs from Disney musicals.’It was so much fun,’ Myah said. ‘I had the best time seeing everyone dressed up and dancing with their hands in the air. It was such a good feeling.’
The celebration ensures children can take part in one of the school year’s most anticipated events, even while they are receiving care.
‘We believe that children who are in hospital shouldn’t miss out on Book Week. So, we offer this as a special week on all the wards and in the foyer,’ said Colin.
‘It brings a bit of joy to their lives.’
