Dr Zane Kaplan

Dr Zane Kaplan is clinical and laboratory haematologist as well as a molecular pathologist at Monash Health. He is also the head of the state Haemoglobinopathy and Haemophilia reference laboratory, providing molecular diagnostics including Chorionic Villus Sample (CVS) testing for the state of Victoria and Tasmania. Dr Kaplan is the head of the haemoglobinopathy service and the medical lead of the Medical Infusion Unit at Monash Health.
Dr Kaplan is a senior lecturer for the Department of Haematology in the School of Clinical Sciences Monash University. His laboratory and clinical focus is on the molecular diagnosis and management of thalassaemia and sickle cell disease, as well as the development of novel therapeutic strategies in these diseases. Additionally, he has research interest in haemostasis and thrombosis having undertaken a PhD in the field at Australian Centre for Blood Diseases at the Alfred Hospital. He continues to be actively involved in research being as PhD supervisor and researcher in both clinical trials as well as basic scientific research.
In the last 5 years Dr Kaplan has co-authored multiple publication in high-ranking journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Haematology, Blood and Blood Advances. Dr Kaplan is actively involved in medical student as well as post graduate teaching and is a Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia examiner in haematology and molecular pathology.
