Stream Structure

Monash Health offers Registered Nurses General Nursing Stream (for both PMCV and PMCV Ineligible applicants), Paediatric and Neonatal stream, and Mental Health Nursing Stream options.

Please note, the Nursing Acute and Complex Care streams offered in previous years have been amalgamated into the General Nursing Summer, Autumn and Winter Streams. Acute Care and Complex Care are no longer offered.

General Nursing (Summer, Autumn, Winter, Paediatric and Neonatal, and PMCV Ineligible Streams):

  • A 12-month structured program, consisting of two 6-month rotations
  • An option to work Part-time or Full-time:
    • 0.84EFT (64 hours per fortnight)
    • Full time 1.0EFT (76 hours per fortnight)
  • Full-time employees accrue 4 ADO hrs per fortnight
  • Extensive paid orientation and training program prior to commencing in the clinical area, incorporating organisation, Graduate Program and clinical learning activities to assist in a seamless transition to work
  • Graduate Study days and learning pathways specific to ward clinical specialties
  • Ongoing employment offered at the completion of the program within Monash Health

Mental Health:

  • A 2-year structured program (12-month Graduate program followed by 12-month Post Graduate Year), consisting of four 6-month rotations
  • An option to work Part-time or Full-time:
    • 0.84EFT (64 hours per fortnight)
    • or full time 1.0EFT (76 hours per fortnight)
  • Full-time employees accrue 4 ADO hrs per fortnight
  • Orientation and training program
  • Graduate Study days

General Nursing Streams (PMCV Applicants)

Monash Health offers Registered Nurses multiple General Nursing stream options. All general nursing streams have a main commencement date when Graduates will start in their clinical area, but also offer flexible entry to accommodate unforeseen circumstances:

What is flexible entry?

Flexible entry allows for Graduates to commence in their allocated clinical areas prior to the planned commencement date to accommodate:

  • Individual extenuating circumstances
  • Organisational/clinical area requirements
  • Late registration
  • Last minute changes or delays to clinical placements

Flexible entry is offered on a case-by-case basis as required.

General Nursing Stream Specialty Preference Areas

Graduates in the General Nursing streams are guaranteed to rotate to one of their five selected preference areas. This may be in either rotation 1 or rotation 2. For their other rotation, the graduate may be placed in any clinical area across Monash Health.

General Nursing Stream opportunities to rotate to the Victorian Heart Hospital (VHH)

We are excited to announce that 2023 Graduates will have the option to apply for a specialty rotation in the new Victorian Heart Hospital, our new state-of-the-art specialist cardiac hospital.

The VHH will provide innovative, holistic, and patient-centred care, as well as world-leading research and education.

Located on the Monash University Clayton campus, the hospital will integrate clinical cardiology services, research and education to create a centre of excellence, raising the profile of cardiovascular research, treatment and training. Paediatric and Neonatal Nursing Stream

The Paediatric and Neonatal Nursing stream is available as an option for the Summer intake (commencing February 2023). This stream offers a unique opportunity to undertake 2 specialty rotations in a Paediatric and/or Neonatal environment across the Monash Children’s sites (Clayton, Dandenong, or Casey).

Applications for the 2023 Paediatric and Neonatal Nursing Stream open Monday 6 June – link will be added when applications open.

Paediatric and Neonatal Nursing stream Graduates are provided:

  • An extensive paid general Graduate orientation and training program delivered flexibly throughout December 2022 – January 2023
  • An additional Paediatric focused orientation program from 30 January – 3 February 2023, prior to commencing supernumerary shifts in the clinical area on Monday 6 February 2023
  • A 12-month structured program, consisting of two 6-month Paediatric or Neonatal rotations
  • Paediatric and Neonatal specific study days throughout the program
  • An option to work Part-time or Full-time:
    • 0.84EFT (64 hours per fortnight)
    • Full time 1.0EFT (76 hours per fortnight)
  • Full-time employees accrue 4 ADO hrs per fortnight
  • Ongoing employment offered at the completion of the program within Monash Health

Mental Health Nursing Stream

Mental health nursing is an exciting and challenging specialty that provides care, treatment, and support for individuals, their families and carers who are experiencing a mental illness or disorder. An essential part of a mental health nurses’ role is to develop and maintain an effective and therapeutic relationship and to provide comprehensive and holistic care. There is a strong focus on working collaboratively with the individual experiencing mental health issues, their family and/or carers, key workers and the interdisciplinary team.

To assist in a transition into mental health nursing, graduates undertake the Master of Advanced Nursing (Mental Health) through Monash University in the second or postgraduate year.

Mental Health Nursing preference options include:

  • Acute Inpatient Mental Health
  • Rehabilitation (Inpatient or Community)
  • Residential Withdrawal Unit
  • Perinatal and Infant Inpatient Unit
  • Early in Life Mental Health
  • Aged Person’s Mental Health

When applying to the Mental Health Nursing Graduate Program job advertisements are through the Monash Health Mercury website, you must upload and attach the following documents with your submission:

  1. Mental Health 2023 Graduate Program Digital Application Template
  2. A cover letter for the Mental Health Nursing Stream (required for this stream only)
  3. Academic Transcript, including a grading key page
  4. Two clinical appraisals, one must be a mental health clinical appraisal

PMCV Ineligible Nursing Stream

Monash Health is pleased to offer Graduate applicants who are not able to participate in PMCV Allocation and Placement Service the opportunity to join the Monash Health Graduate Program as part of the PMCV Ineligible Nursing Stream. PMCV Ineligible applicants are able to nominate their preferred Graduate Program intake from the following options, with positions offered subject to availability:

  • February 2023
  • May 2023
  • August 2023

Successful PMCV Ineligible Nursing Graduate applicants are able to nominate five (5) preference areas from those listed above for General Nursing Streams during their onboarding process. While the Monash Health Graduate Program team endeavours to accommodate specialty preferences for Graduates, we are unfortunately unable to guarantee rotations into preference areas for applicants in the PMCV Ineligible streams.

Rotations are carefully allocated to provide each graduate with the best possible opportunity to consolidate their skills.
