Professor Alberta Hoi

Professor Alberta Hoi is Head of the Monash Lupus Clinic and Professor in the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash University. Her role includes inpatient and outpatient
rheumatology care, as well as the supervision and mentorship of undergraduate and
postgraduate students in clinical and translational research.
She specialises in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and related connective tissue diseases, including Sjögren’s disease, dermatomyositis, and vasculitis, with interests in transition care and optimising pregnancy outcomes in women with SLE.
Her research focuses on disease predictors, comorbidities, and patient-reported outcomes across lupus and Sjögren’s disease. She has chaired the Australian Lupus Registry & Biobank since 2006 and serves on the executive steering committee of the Asia Pacific Lupus Collaborative, as well as OMERACT working groups for SLE and Sjögren’s core outcome domain development. She led the establishment of the first Victorian Sjögren Registry and is a founding leader of the national registry, SOLAR – Sjögren’s Outcomes, Longitudinal Assessment & Research in Australia, the first coordinated longitudinal research platform for Sjögren’s disease in Australia.
Her work is supported by funding from Arthritis Australia, the Perpetual IMPACT
Philanthropy Program, the Medical Research Future Fund, and industry partners. She is the recipient of the Australian Rheumatology Association President’s Prize for Collaborative Research and is principal investigator on multiple Phase 2 and Phase 3 SLE clinical trials, including serving as the Australian rheumatology lead for the first CAR-T cell therapy trial in SLE.
