Interventional Radiology / Interventional Oncology

The Interventional Radiology service at Monash Health provides a comprehensive range of image-guided, minimallyinvasive treatments.

We provide clinical management and ongoing follow-up for patients with a variety of medical problems, including:

  • Treatment of arteriovenous malformations in adults and children as part of the Monash Vascular Malformations Multidisciplinary Service
  • Endovascular treatments for arterial and venous pathologies including visceral aneurysms and venous obstruction and reflux
  • Endovascular treatments for peripheral arterial disease and varicose veins in collaboration with Vascular Surgery
  • A variety of endovascular and image-guided treatments for patients with cirrhosis or biliary pathologies in collaboration with Gastroenterology and Hepatology
  • Percutaneous ablation of tumours including liver, renal, lung, soft tissue and bone tumours and metastases
  • Visceral embolisation including uterine artery embolisation for fibroids and prostate artery embolisation for benign prostatic hypertrophy

Our Specialist Interventional Radiologists operate at Monash Medical Centre Clayton, Monash Children’s Hospital, the Victorian Heart Hospital, Dandenong Hospital, and Casey Hospital.

Our outpatient clinic is located at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton – Special Medicine Building.

  • Address referral to the  Head of Unit: Dr Diederick De Boo
  • The patient will be seen by a clinician within this specialty
  • The referral should indicate that it is valid for an indefinite period

Requests for Diagnostic Imaging

To make referrals for patients who only require diagnostic imaging and DO NOT require management or review in our outpatient clinic, please refer to Monash Health Diagnostic Imaging.

Requests for image-guided minor procedures (e.g. percutaneous biopsy, pleural or ascitic tap, musculoskeletal injection)

For patients who require minor image-guided procedures please refer as per standard Monash Health Diagnostic Imaging referral guidelines.

This includes patients who do not require ongoing clinical management or pre-operative assessment, such as:

  • Percutaneous biopsy
  • Superficial percutaneous drainage (e.g. ascitic/pleural tap, lumbar puncture)
  • Musculoskeletal or superficial injection (e.g. joint injection, hydrodilatation, nerve root or epidural steroid injection)
  • Image guided breast biopsies/localisation
  • Outpatient venous access referrals (e.g. PICC line, portacath, permacath dialysis catheter insertion)
