The Monash Health Graduate Program provides newly registered Nurses and Midwives with diverse opportunities to consolidate their skills, expand their experience as a beginning professional and grow their career with Victoria’s largest healthcare provider.

Nursing Program Structure 

Monash Health offers Registered Nurses in their first 12 months of practice a range of program options including:

  • General Nursing Program
  • Paediatric & Neonatal Program
  • Residential Aged Care & Subacute Nursing Program
  • Mental Health Nursing Program
  • Combined Mental Health & General Nursing Program

The Monash Health Graduate experience includes: 

  • 12-month structured program with two 6-month rotations
  • Working part-time (64 hours/fortnight) on a rotating roster
  • Extensive paid orientation conducted via a combination of online and in-person training prior to commencement in the clinical area
  • Graduate study days and learning pathways specific to ward clinical specialties
  • The opportunity to apply for available positions within Monash Health upon successful completion of the program

General Nursing Program

Intake dates:

  • Monday 2 February 2026
  • Monday 3 August 2026

Our General Nursing Program promises an exciting journey with a guaranteed allocation in an acute or specialty area in either the first or second rotation of the graduate year.

The General Nursing Program offers rotations at the following sites:

Graduates may complete rotations in any of the following clinical areas, providing a well-rounded experience throughout the two 6-month rotations as part of the graduate program:

  • Acute medical
  • Acute surgical
  • Cardiology/Cardiothoracics/Cardiac Specialties
  • Diagnostic Imaging/Outpatients/ Day Treatment Centre/Clinical Trials/ Medical Infusion Unit/Immediate Recovery Centre
  • Emergency
  • Gastrosciences (includes Gastroenterology, Colorectal and Gastrosurgery)
  • Haemodialysis
  • Neurosciences/Neurosurgery
  • Oncology/Haematology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Paediatrics and Newborn Services
  • Palliative Care
  • Perioperative/Endoscopy/Day Procedure Unit/Day Surgery Unit
  • Renal/Nephrology
  • Residential Aged Care
  • Respiratory
  • Subacute and rehabilitation

Paediatric and Neonatal Nursing Program

Intake date: Monday 2 February 2026

The Paediatric and Neonatal Nursing Program offers a unique opportunity to undertake two specialty rotations in a Paediatric and/or Neonatal environment across the Monash Children’s sites (Clayton, Dandenong, or Casey).

Paediatric and Neonatal Clinical Rotations

Monash Children’s Hospital is one of Australia’s leading providers of integrated children’s health services, caring for more than 100,000 children every year, across three sites – our main campus at Clayton and satellite sites at Dandenong and Casey Hospitals. Graduates may rotate to paediatric and neonatal areas and specialties within the Monash Children’s Hospital, Dandenong Hospital or Casey Hospital during their program. Areas include:

  • Paediatric surgical
  • Paediatric medical
  • Paediatric oncology and haematology
  • Paediatric theatres
  • Special care nursery (SCN)
  • Neonatal intensive care (NICU)
  • Adolescent inpatients
  • Paediatric day surgical unit
  • Children’s Cancer Centre (Day Oncology)

Residential Aged Care and Subacute Nursing Program

Intake date: Monday 2 February 2026

The Residential Aged Care (RACs) and Subacute Nursing offers a dynamic 12-month experience in Aged Care and Subacute areas. With two 6-month rotations across diverse clinical settings, this program provides invaluable exposure and expertise. This is an incredible opportunity for Graduates seeking a career in these specialised areas of nursing.

The RACs and Subacute Program offers rotations at the following sites:

  • Boollam Boollam (Heatherton)
  • Casey Hospital (Berwick)
  • Chestnut Gardens Avenue Aged Care (Doveton)
  • Chestnut Gardens Boulevard Aged Care (Doveton)
  • Kingston Centre (Heatherton)

Graduates may commence their program in either an aged care or a subacute area as allocated by the Graduate Program team and will complete the alternate area in their second rotation.

Mental Health Nursing Program

Intake dates:

  • Monday 2 February 2026
  • Monday 4 May 2026
  • Monday 3 August 2026

Mental Health nursing is an exciting and challenging specialty that provides care, treatment, and support for individuals, their families and carers who are experiencing a mental illness or disorder. An essential part of a mental health nurses’ role is to develop and maintain an effective and therapeutic relationship and to provide comprehensive and holistic care. There is a strong focus on working collaboratively with the individual experiencing mental health issues, their family and/or carers, key workers and the interdisciplinary team.

Mental Health Nursing clinical areas include:

  • Acute Inpatient Mental Health
  • Rehabilitation (Inpatient or Community)
  • Early in Life Mental Health
  • Older Adult’s Mental Health

Combined Mental Health and General Nursing Program

Intake date: Monday 2 February 2026

The Combined Mental Health and General Nursing Program offers one 6-month rotation in mental health, gaining valuable experience in an inpatient or community setting, and one 6-month general nursing rotation in either the first or second rotation.

This unique stream provides an exceptional opportunity for graduates who are passionate about both mental health and general nursing.

Mental Health Nursing clinical areas include:

  • Acute Inpatient Mental Health
  • Rehabilitation (Inpatient or Community)
  • Early in Life Mental Health
  • Older Adult’s Mental Health

General Nursing rotations are available across a range of sites including Monash Medical Centre, Dandenong Hospital, Casey Hospital and Moorabbin Hospital.

Graduates may commence their program in either Mental Health Nursing or General Nursing as allocated by the Graduate Program team and will complete the alternate discipline in their second rotation.
