Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology is a medical specialty that utilises imaging such as x-ray, ultrasound and CT to perform precise minimally invasive surgical procedures through pinhole incisions.

The dedicated Interventional Radiology team at Monash Health provide an inpatient and outpatient (elective) clinical service, including outpatient clinic for periprocedural care of patients undergoing interventional treatments.

The range of clinical conditions managed and elective procedures provided includes:

Abdominal intervention

  • Enteral feeding tubes including gastrostomy
  • Procedural management of portal venous hypertension including variceal embolisation, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), and splenic artery embolisation
  • Biliary drainage and stenting for biliary obstruction
  • Lymphangiography

Gynaecological intervention

  • Uterine artery embolisation (UAE); also referred to as uterine fibroid embolisation (UFE)
  • Hysterosalpingography (HSG) and Fallopian Tube Recanalisation (FTR)
  • Contraceptive implant (Implanon) removal under ultrasound imaging guidance
  • Management of female pelvic venous congestion (pelvic congestion syndrome)

Interventional Oncology

  • Thermal ablation of tumours, including liver, kidney and lung tumours
  • Trans-arterial chemoembolisation (TACE)
  • Chemical neurolysis procedures including celiac plexus neurolysis

Musculoskeletal intervention

  • Vertebroplasty
  • Kyphoplasty
  • Bone tumour ablation such as osteoid osteoma
  • Tumour embolisation

Paediatric Intervention

  • Enteral feeding tubes
  • Vascular access
  • Management of vascular anomalies
  • Urologic intervention including nephrostomy and ureteric stenting

Pulmonary intervention

  • Diagnostic pulmonary angiography
  • Pulmonary arteriovenous malformation management

Urologic intervention

  • Nephrostomy
  • Ureteric stenting
  • Renal tumour ablation
  • Varicocele embolisation
  • Prostatic artery embolisation (PAE)

Vascular intervention

  • Arteriovenous malformations and Vascular Anomalies
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Diagnostic angiography
  • Angioplasty and stenting
  • Visceral aneurysm management including embolisation and stenting
  • Aortic graft endoleak management
  • Iliocaval and peripheral venous disease including venous stenting and IVC filters
  • Central venous access catheters including chemotherapy ports and dialysis access
  • Management of female pelvic venous congestion (pelvic congestion syndrome)
