Fertility services

The Public Fertility Care Program: Bringing the possibility of parenthood to all Victorians.

Victoria’s Public Fertility Care Program provides free fertility assessment and treatment, including in‑vitro fertilisation (IVF).
The service is available to eligible Victorians who want to start or grow their families. Treatment through Public Fertility Care is free. However, some people may still have out‑of‑pocket costs for medicines or tests that are not covered by the service.
Public Fertility Care helps make fertility treatment fairer and more affordable for thousands of people who currently have limited access to private fertility services.

Who can access the Public Fertility Care Program?

The Public Fertility Care Program focuses on improving access for people who may face barriers to private fertility services, including:

  • people on low incomes
  • people living in rural or regional Victoria
  • people who need donor services or altruistic surrogacy support, including those who are single and LGBTIQA+
  • people who need fertility preservation because of medical treatment, such as cancer treatment or gender‑affirming care
  • people who need genetic testing because they are known carriers of medical conditions that could affect the health of their child

How the service works

The Public Fertility Care Program is delivered through a partnership between The Royal Women’s Hospital and public health services across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. This partnership includes Monash Health and helps ensure fertility care is available closer to where people live. To access the program, patients need a referral from a general practitioner (GP) or a relevant specialist. Once a referral is accepted, patients will be told which service-partner will provide their care. If patients live within the Monash Health catchment, we will be your care provider.
