Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine

Monash Anaesthesia is the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at Monash Health.

Our department consists of approximately 150 specialist anaesthetists, 80 anaesthetic trainees, plus acute pain clinical nurse specialists, research nurses and administrative assistants.

We operate across many sites. These include:

  • Monash Medical Centre
  • Monash Children’s Hospital
  • Dandenong Hospital
  • Casey Hospital
  • Victorian Heart Hospital
  • Moorabbin Hospital
  • Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre
  • Kingston Centre
  • Jessie McPherson Private Hospital

Our operating theatres have elective and emergency surgery in all the major adult surgical specialties with the support of four adult intensive care units.

With Monash Children’s hospital an important part of Monash Health, we assist in the care of a wide range of paediatric surgical cases with the backup of a special care nursery, neonatal intensive care unit and a paediatric intensive care unit on site.

We are heavily involved in the Victorian Heart hospital, which is a dedicated tertiary referral centre for cardiology and cardiac surgery.

Monash Health is the largest maternity provider in Victoria, providing care to over 10,000 women a year in low and high risk centres, with access to adult and neonatal intesive care. Our anaesthetists are involved in the birth suites and operating theatres for maternity patients.
