Join Professor Allen Cheng and get in front of the flu

Professor Allen Cheng, Director of Infectious Diseases, recently got his flu vaccination at Monash Medical Centre and shared some insights into the importance of vaccination this flu season.

“The flu vaccine is a very simple thing you can get to protect yourself, your patients, and the people you live with.

“If you don’t get the flu, then you can’t pass it on,” said Professor Cheng.

The highest protection against influenza occurs in the first 3-4 months after your vaccination, and it is an easy and safe way of protecting ourselves, our patients and each other.

Professor Cheng also revealed that flu season started early this year.

“We are seeing more flu admissions than we normally would.

“In fact, we are seeing similar amounts of flu admissions to COVID-19 admissions. So, we need to take them both equally as seriously.”

Influenza vaccines can be co-administered (given on the same day) as any COVID-19 vaccine.

“If you’re due for your COVID-19 booster, there are no issues with getting your flu vaccine at the same time,” said Professor Cheng.
