Music and art therapists at Monash Health work with people across the lifespan to address physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs using music and art.  

Monash Health is Victoria’s largest health service, and home to one of the largest Music Therapy teams in Australia.  

About our Music and Art Therapy team

Working with patients from birth to end-of-life, there are unrivalled opportunities for music therapists to grow their careers and work across a broad range of clinical areas at Monash Health.  

Art Therapy is a growing service at Monash Health, and currently runs within Monash Children’s Hospital and the South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault (SECASA). 

While many music and art therapists work within multidisciplinary teams, Monash Health’s Music and Art Therapy team are proud of their supportive culture, and Grade 1, Grade 2 and senior clinicians meet regularly.  

There are opportunities for music and art therapists of all career stages to further their education and skillset, including peer-to-peer learning, professional supervision, internal and external professional development and internal research projects.  

Our comprehensive Grade 1 music therapist rotational program allows for early-career music therapists to gain experience across various Monash Health settings, including acute care, subacute care and Monash Children’s. 

The music therapy team also run a student program, facilitated in conjunction with the University of Melbourne.  

Our areas of Music and Art Therapy practice

Acute hospital-based care

There is a range of opportunities available in acute hospital-based care for music therapists at both Monash Medical Centre and Casey Hospital.  

This work includes but is not limited to:  

  • Working in a multi-disciplinary team across all streams including general medicine and ICU 
  • Providing care for patients with behavioural concerns and/or who require psychosocial support  
  • Supporting a positive auditory environment for patients and employees. 

Sub-acute hospital based care

At Monash Health, music therapists work in a subacute setting with inpatients at both Casey and Kingston Hospitals.  

This work includes, but is not limited to:  

  • Rehabilitation  
  • Geriatric Evaluation Management (GEM)  
  • Working with patients with neurological conditions  
  • Working with patients with movement disorders.  

Care in the community

Music and art therapists work in multidisciplinary teams within Monash Health’s community services across multiple sites.  

This work includes, but is not limited to: 

  • Working with adolescents at Monash Health Community Dandenong  
  • Working within a pilot music therapy program in the South Eastern Centre Against Sexual Assault (SECASA). 

Mental Health

There are opportunities for music therapists to work with both adults and children in mental health at Monash Health.  

This includes, but is not limited to:  

  • Working with adolescents  
  • Working within the Oasis and Stepping Stones programs at Monash Children’s Hospital 
  • Working within Monash Health’s Adult Mental Health program at Dandenong Hospital.

Children's

At Monash Children’s Hospital, music and art therapists work with children of all ages, from neonates to adolescents.  

This work includes working within:  

  • General medicine  
  • Oncology  
  • Neonatal intensive care  
  • Adolescent eating disorders  
  • The Victorian Paediatric Rehabilitation Service.
