Monash Health’s inpatient palliative care unit, McCulloch House, recently welcomed founders, donors, clinicians, community partners and health service leadership to celebrate the establishment of the health service’s Supportive and Palliative Care Unit 30 years ago.
Monash Health’s Supportive and Palliative Care Unit opened its doors on 21 February 1996.
A meaningful milestone
Attendees at last month’s celebration were welcomed by the Head of Unit for Supportive and Palliative Care, Fiona Runacres, who said they represented the ‘many chapters’ in the history of McCulloch House.
‘To our past and present clinical staff: thank you for the extraordinary care you have provided over the decades, and for joining us today to celebrate this milestone,’ she said.
Among those in attendance was Rev Dr Ruth Redpath AO, one of Australia’s pioneers in palliative care.
Monash Health’s Supportive and Palliative Care Unit cares for over 3,000 patients annually through the hospital consultation liaison service and provides outpatient clinic services and inpatient specialist care units at McCulloch House in Clayton and Casey Hospital in Berwick.
‘Monash Health’s new strategy, Care reimagined, invites us to continue evolving palliative care beyond the hospital — meeting patients along their treatment journey, and delivering tomorrow’s care, today, with dignity, compassion and choice,’ Monash Health Deputy CEO Rachelle Anstey.
‘As we move into the next 30 years, I am confident our services will evolve to continue the proud history we celebrate today.’
