The first Monash Airway Course for Emergency Department Teams (MAC4ED) was held on 9 September, with senior medical and nursing clinicians from the Casey Emergency Department taking part.

Delivered by Monash Simulation, the one-day course offers an excellent learning experience in the management of complex airway emergencies and resuscitation. Participants moved through hands-on skills workshops, visually enhanced mental simulation (VEMS), immersive simulation scenarios and facilitated discussions, building both technical expertise and the team skills that underpin safe, effective care.
Alongside technical skills, the course puts strong emphasis on the human factors that shape outcomes in a crisis: teamwork, role clarity, effective leadership, communication, resource utilisation, prioritisation, and shared understanding. By training doctors and nurses together, the course reflects how airway emergencies are managed in practice –as a coordinated, collaborative team effort.
Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. “I can’t wait to take back the skills and knowledge I have learned to share with my colleagues, to encourage best practice and really advocate for utilising the vortex approach to managing airways. I’m inspired to contribute more to team discussions and have a renewed confidence in my own knowledge and ability to have intelligent discussions and think critically”, said one participant.
The course is delivered by an experienced faculty consisting of senior staff working in Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, and is part of Monash Simulation’s broader commitment to education, quality improvement, patient safety and culture-building within Monash Health.
The next MAC4ED course will be held on the 16th of December 2026.
