Dandenong Primary School CommunityOSH have taken exciting steps towards creating a healthier food and drink environment for children by joining Vic Kids Eat Well. With support from our team, they have successfully made six “bite-sized” menu changes.  Â
One key change was swapping chocolate chip muffins and lemon cake for more nutritious foods. Children now enjoy snacks including plain yogurt, custard, and cheese sticks. Once a week, flavoured milk is offered as a tasty dairy option for afternoon tea. Fresh fruits like watermelon, peaches, and blueberries have been added to the afternoon snack platter. Â
The focus on healthy eating extends beyond the menu. This service has introduced engaging, food-related activities, including cooking, science experiments, role-playing games, and colouring and drawing. Children actively participate in food preparation, such as making homemade vegetable sauce for their pita pizzas, giving them a fun and hands-on way to enjoy more veggies. They now celebrate birthdays with cards signed by classmates, a healthier alternative to mini cakes that they once gave.   Â
Veronica, the service’s Program Manager, shared, “Since working on Vic Kids Eat Well, I’ve noticed a significant increase in children’s motivation and curiosity in trying different foods. The children have loved discovering new flavour combinations, turning healthy eating into a fun learning experience.”   Â
