There are upcoming changes to the management of maternity, newborn and gynaecology services at Sandringham Hospital.
From 1 July 2026, these services will transition from Monash Health to Bayside Health. This is a change in management only. Women and families will continue to receive the same high quality, expert maternity and newborn care at Sandringham Hospital.
Sandringham Hospital is part of the newly established Bayside Health. This new health service brings together Alfred Health, Peninsula Health, Kooweerup Regional Health Service, Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to deliver better and more connected care to our communities.
Maternity, newborn and gynaecology services at Sandringham Hospital will now be an extension of the well-established program at Peninsula University Hospital (formerly Frankston Hospital).
What does this mean for patients?
The level of maternity and newborn care provided at Sandringham Hospital will remain the same.
- All day-to-day maternity, newborn and gynaecology services will continue as usual.
- If patients are booked to have their baby at Sandringham Hospital, this will not change.
- All appointments will continue in the same location.
- The care team, including midwives, nurses and doctors, will remain the same.
- Paediatric services at Sandringham Hospital will continue.
- Gynaecology services will continue to be available for local patients.
If more complex care is required, this will be provided at either Peninsula University Hospital (part of Bayside Health) or Monash Health.
What does this mean for referrals?
- Pregnancy and gynaecology patients living in the Sandringham Hospital, Bayside Health catchment can be referred to Sandringham Hospital via the new process below from 1 July.
- Referral pathways to Monash Health Women’s and Newborn Program will remain unchanged.
- Whilst Monash Health welcomes gynaecology referrals from an open catchment, please be advised that current service demand is great. Referrers are encouraged to utilise the local Sandringham Gynaecology Service (now provided through Bayside Health) to facilitate timely patient access.
