Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Learn more about the PICU Transition to Specialty Program.

Program details

Monash Children’s Hospital (MCH), part of Monash Health, is one of Australia’s leading providers of integrated children’s health services, with more than 30 specialist services and programs.

Our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a state of the art 10-bed unit, with a complex patient mix. It provides 24/7 care for critically ill children from babies to adolescents. Our PICU is one of only two tertiary paediatric intensive care units in Victoria, and is staffed by highly trained doctors and nurses who specialise in intensive care to ensure the best possible outcomes for all children admitted.

The PICU Transition to Specialty Program (PICU TSP) is aimed at developing and consolidating the required skill set and critical thinking required to work in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. It is a combination of well-supported clinical time in PICU, reinforced with tailored theoretical and practical content delivered by PICU educators, registered nurses and medical staff including six study days. Completion of the PICU TSP will see successful candidates trained in non-invasive and invasive ventilation skills required to work in the critical care setting.

The PICU TSP is a six month program, which begins with dedicated supernumerary time with experienced PICU registered nurses. Ongoing employment opportunities are possible pending EFT availability at completion of the program.

Entry requirements for the PICU TSP are:

  • Registration with the AHPRA as a Registered Nurse with current practicing certificate
  • Minimum of 12 months acute nursing experience
  • Satisfactory references and pre-entrance interview
