Graduate Certificate of Specialist Nursing Practice (Paediatric)

Course Synopsis

The Graduate Certificate of Specialist Nursing Practice is a post-professional program for registered nurses wishing to undertake specialist paediatric training. The course combines theory and clinical practice components with the aim of developing students as life-long learners with problem solving, communication and research skills.

Successful graduates are prepared for practice as specialist paediatric nurses within multidisciplinary healthcare teams and the general paediatric ward environment.

Eligibility criteria

  • Registered nurse employed by Monash Health in an acute Paediatric ward (MCH, Casey or DDH Children’s Wards)
  • Minimum two years of acute paediatric nursing experience.
  • Commitment towards and ability to undertake postgraduate study.
  • Demonstrated willingness to pursue practice advancement.

28 February – 18 November 2022

Course delivery

Delivered by Monash University, NUR 5709 is a combination of online study, face-to-face learning and practical application and assessment. NUR5704 and NUR5325 are delivered via a combination of online & face to face learning.

Course Structure

24 credit points structured across three (3) subjects.

NUR5704: Pathophysiology for advanced paediatric nursing

  • Starts 1 March 2022. 6 credit points.

NUR5709: Specialist nursing practice – paediatrics   

  • Starts April 2022. 12 credit points.

NUR5325: Clinical leadership and application

  • Starts August 2022. 6 credit points.

Study days

  • NUR5709 – There are 7 study days. Monash Health employees may be eligible to have these as paid leave.
  • NUR5704 and NUR5325 – study days as required per subject outline.
