There are also opportunities to work in specialised clinical areas, with the NDIS, Monash Health Food Services and on focused projects and research. 

About our Nutrition and Dietetics team

Being a part of Victoria’s largest health service means dietitians can gain a breadth of clinical experience and career progression within the one organisation. This includes structured professional development, clinical supervision and teaching and training opportunities. 

The Nutrition and Dietetics team is a large and diverse cohort, and communication, involvement and innovation is encouraged, regardless of your career stage. Within the discipline, there are individual support groups for Grade 1, 2 and senior clinicians as well as clinical stream workgroups.

Our areas of  Nutrition and Dietetics practice

Acute hospital-based care

Our acute, hospital-based teams include dietitians ranging from Grades 1-4 working with adults presenting with varying medical conditions at Monash Medical Centre (Clayton), Casey Hospital, Dandenong Hospital, Moorabbin Hospital and the Victorian Heart Hospital.  

This work includes but is not limited to:  

  • Working within a multidisciplinary team 
  • Nutritional assessments 
  • Prescribing therapeutic diets 
  • Nutrition support and education based on current evidence-based practices to ensure safe discharge 
  • Advocating for patients
  • Post-discharge follow up. 

Dietitians working with adults in the acute inpatient care setting may see patients within the following streams: 

  • General medicine  
  • Critical care  
  • Oncology 
  • Gastroenterology 
  • Cardiology including cardiac rehabilitation at the Victorian Heart Hospital 
  • Surgery  
  • Renal 
  • Mental Health. 

Sub-acute hospital based care

Monash Health’s dietitians working in subacute bed-based care, work one-on-one with adult inpatients at Casey and Kingston Hospitals. 

This work includes but is not limited to:  

  • Rehabilitation  
  • Aged care 
  • Transition to home-based care  
  • Residential Aged Care.

Care in the community

Various roles are offered for Monash Health dietitians working in multidisciplinary programs with adults and children in the community at our sites in Cranbourne, Pakenham, Springvale, Dandenong and Kingston, in clients’ homes and at other community venues. 

This work includes but is not limited to: 

  • Rehabilitation (centre and home based) 
  • Aged and Community Care 
  • Integrated Community Health 
  • Child and Family
  • Community Mental Health 
  • Health Promotion 
  • Monash @ Home Aged and Rehabilitation Care 
  • Transition Care Program 
  • Transitional Support Unit 
  • Youth and Family 
  • Continence Service. 

Mental Health

There are opportunities for dietitians to work within mental health at Monash Health.  

This work includes:  

  • Working with inpatients with eating disorders 
  • Working within our wellness and recovery program. 

Children's

There are a range of opportunities for dietitians to work in paediatrics at Monash Health. Our large team of dietitians are part of a multi-disciplinary Allied Health team providing inpatient and outpatient care across the lifespan from neonates through to adolescents and their families.  

Dietitians are embedded in many multi-disciplinary speciality teams at Monash Children’s Hospital, Casey Hospital and in the paediatric special care nursery at Sandringham Hospital.  These teams include:  

  • Oncology 
  • Adolescent Medicine (Eating Disorders) 
  • Allergies  
  • Cystic Fibrosis 
  • Diabetes 
  • Gastroenterology  
  • Neurology (Dietary Therapies for Epilepsy) 
  • Nephrology 
  • Victorian Paediatric Rehabilitation Service (VPRS) 
  • Paediatric Intensive Care (PICU) 
  • Neonatal Intensive Care.
