Neutropenia is a medical condition in which there are not enough white blood cells, known as neutrophils, circulating in the bloodstream. Neutrophils are an important part of the immune system, helping to protect the body against bacterial infections.
One of the side effects of receiving chemotherapy is a decrease in the number of your white blood cells. This can increase your risk of infection.
It is recommended that all patients undergoing chemotherapy carry a special medical alert card for neutropenia.
By carrying the alert card, you can quickly refer to the symptoms of a possible infection.
By presenting the card to the Emergency Department of a hospital, healthcare professionals will be able to quickly provide you with the right care.
Monash Health patients will be given a paper alert card following their education session when undertaking chemotherapy for the first time.
