Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander careers: graduate nurse constantly growing and learning

Kyeshia-Leigh Kent Licciardi’s experience as an expectant mum spurred her to study nursing.

‘I had two really traumatic birth experiences. Then I had a third baby and a fourth, and I kind of fell in love with the whole birth process,’ said newly graduated Registered Nurse and proud Bidjara woman, Kyeshia.

‘I started nursing with the goal of doing a midwifery degree. Along the way, I started to really enjoy general nursing and learning lots of things.’

Kyeshia joined Monash Health’s Nursing and Midwifery Graduate Program in February.

She is working on the Cardiac General Medicine Ward at Casey Hospital for her first rotation.

‘I’m excited. Every day we see something different. We are constantly growing and expanding our skills.’

At a meet-and-greet, Kyeshia enjoyed spending time with fellow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates. At the event, she learnt more about the various tailored cultural supports Monash Health offers to all its Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander employees.

‘We heard about the Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nursing Midwifery (CATSINaM) and the opportunity to potentially attend some of their conferences. The team can also give us cultural support on the floor if needed,’ said Kyeshia.

Outside of work, the mother-of-four enjoys her busy family life and joins online language workshops run by her family when she can.

‘I would like to learn the language to pass those skills on to future generations. Alot of language has been lost and I would like to help preserve it.’

Kyeshia’s goal remains to become a midwife. On her journey there, she plans to soak up experiences and learn all she can.

‘There are so many different opportunities in nursing, it’s a career where you’re always evolving and you’re always learning.’

Monash Health celebrates and values the diverse skills and experience Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people bring to our workforce.
