After opening in early 2025, DS Kids Hub St Josephine Bakhita OSHC in Clyde North joined Vic Kids Eat Well following recommendations from nearby services.Â
In the space of about 6 months, Sajani Hettigoda – the service’s coordinator – showed great enthusiasm and completed Vic Kids Eat Well by gradually making enhancements to the menu and activities to meet the Victorian Food and Drink Guidelines for OSHC. Â
Key changes included:Â
- Breakfast: Adding yoghurt with fruit, homemade pancakes with fruit and cheese toasties as additional options with toast and cerealsÂ
- Afternoon tea: Boosting fruit and vegetables on their daily platter and introducing lots of recipes from the Healthy Eating Advisory Service, including oodles of noodles, homemade pita chips, cocoabanana and carrot muffins, corn fritters, fried rice, homemade sweet potato wedges and salad sandwiches and wrapsÂ
- Activities: Regular cooking activities with nutritious foods such as homemade banana bread, homemade pizzas with veggie toppings, damper, fruit kebabs and smoothies, arts and crafts like fruit face masks and 3D fruit and vegetable making and herb potsÂ
- Special occasions: Focusing on non-food activities for birthdays such as photos with special glasses and homemade bliss balls for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Â
The service also kept their families informed about Vic Kids Eat Well and their achievements via regular newsletters and even shared recipes for families to try at home. Â
Sajani’s enthusiasm and dedication to enhancing the menu in a short period was recognised at the 2025 Monash Health Health Promotion Awards, where she won the Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) Award.Â
