Lyndhurst Primary School in the City of Casey is a large government school that places strong emphasis on mental health and wellbeing. Â
The school actively participates in whole-school programs and professional development, including Mental Health in Primary Schools, Be You, Respectful Relationships, the Berry Street Education Model and Monash Health Health Promotion’s Schools’ Health and Wellbeing Community of Practice.Â
In 2025, with support from Monash Health’s Health Promotion team, the school achieved state recognition for completing the Mental Health and Wellbeing health priority in the Healthy Schools Achievement Program.Â
Highlights from the school’s wellbeing approach:Â
- Awareness and appreciation days: Harmony Day is a major annual celebration showcasing cultural diversity through food, clothing, and performances. The school also recognises World Teachers’ Day, Education Support Day and Random Acts of Kindness DayÂ
- Classroom strategies: Morning Welcome Circles, Ready to Learn scales and plans, Super Strengths, Brain Breaks and Mindfulness are embedded through the Berry Street Education ModelÂ
- Lunchtime activities: Students enjoy a variety of play options, including Play Cubby, Quiet Play Area, Fun Fridays, Buddy Benches and lunchtime clubs, alongside modern learning spaces and outdoor areasÂ
- Sensory room and additional staff: A supervised sensory room provides a calm space for regulation, and the school has increased wellbeing staffing to support students.Â
The school’s focus on this health area has increased awareness of mental health among students, staff and families, reduced stigma, and fostered a more inclusive and supportive school environment.Â
