Supporting Active and Healthy Families

On Sunday, 23 June, the City of Greater Dandenong council hosted a fun family event for local families to try new activities as part of the ‘Make Your Move’ Strategy. The ‘Active and Healthy Families Event’ at Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough ran from 11am to 2pm, offering come-and-try activities for children and their parents, such as AFL, basketball, soccer, karate, pickleball and step aerobics.

Our team supported the event by hosting a stall with free nutritious food recipes, fact sheets, games, vegetable seeds and merchandise. 41 families attended the stall, and 92% of respondents stated they had learned something new.

The more popular game with the children was the ‘mystery fruit and vegetable box’, with several different and diverse fruits and vegetables. The children had to reach inside the box, find a fruit or vegetable and describe what it felt like before guessing it. Even the parents got involved with the game. Dragon fruit, squash and beetroot were the more challenging fruits to guess. Our Nutrition Resource Pack was also a great hit among the children who did activities like ‘eat the rainbow’ and ‘shadow matching’.

Vegetable seeds, drink bottles, cooler bags, sunscreen, and drawstring bags were provided for free to all attendees. Children and their parents were excited to grow their vegetables at home. Attendees were encouraged to follow the Food From Home or Instagram page for more information about growing and cooking their fruits and vegetables.

The day ended with a raffle by the council, in which one lucky attendee received a free signed St Kilda jersey.
