A reminder for GPs and health professionals that Monash Health provides a limited iron infusion service for patients and that referrals must meet our new specific criteria.

If your patient does not meet our current criteria for an iron infusion, we will be unable to accept your referral.   

Our iron infusion referral criteria is as follows: 

  • Ferritin is less than 30 microgram/L
    or
  • Ferritin is less than 200 microgram/L and transferrin saturation is less than 20% for patients with heart failure or chronic kidney disease
    and
  • Haemoglobin (Hb) is less than 100g/L for men and women.

Please note that haemoglobin and ferritin levels must have been tested within the past three months.

We recommend a trial of oral iron in the first instance.

All GP referrals to the Hospital in the Home Short Iron Infusion service must be made via HealthLink.
