Neonatal Intensive Care or Neonatal Special care course
Monash Newborn comprises a 64 cot NICU/SCN unit at Monash Children’s Hospital Clayton, an 18 cot SCN at Casey hospital and an 8 cot SCN at Dandenong hospital. Monash Newborn provides exceptional care and treatment for 1500 sick and premature babies across our three sites per year. Our babies may require medical or surgical treatment. Some may have had medical conditions identified before birth by our renowned Fetal Diagnostic Unit and require medical or surgical intervention before and after birth. Monash Medical Centre, Clayton is the only Victorian hospital where both newborn baby and mother can be treated on site if they both require intensive care. Monash Newborn is also the largest of the five Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) in Victoria.
Course Synopsis
The student will gain the theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to care for critically unwell infants requiring complex care. Students will learn care of the infant requiring respiratory support (non-invasive and invasive), care of the extreme preterm infant, care of infants requiring surgery and care of infants with congenital anomalies. Students will be supported to attend high-risk births and practice neonatal resuscitation, stabilisation and post birth care. Students will gain the skills to provide evidenced based, best care to infants with a variety of neonatal conditions.

Must be employed at Newborn Monash Health Clayton (NICU or SCN streams) or Casey (SCN course only).
