Monash Medical Centre will receive a $535 million upgrade to deliver a 7-storey tower above the newly expanded emergency department.
About this project
Located in Clayton, it is home to one of Victoria’s largest adult hospitals, one of the state’s busiest emergency departments and is co-located alongside Monash Children’s Hospital.
The site is a major teaching and research hospital, providing a comprehensive range of specialist surgical, medical, allied health, mental health and palliative care services.
After opening its new emergency department in 2022, Monash Medical Centre will now receive another major expansion, with a seven-storey tower to be built above the newly expanded emergency department.
The new multi-storey tower will be home to a new operating theatre complex with pre- and post-operative beds, a new intensive care unit to care for the sickest patients and expanded maternity services including new birthing suites. The project will also deliver a new central sterile services department, improving the way sterile equipment is managed.
Early planning included engagement with employees, patients, visitors and consumer groups to ensure the design and scope of the project meets the needs of our community in Melbourne’s southeast.
Early works commenced in June 2025, with the project expected to be completed in 2029. It will be delivered in partnership with the Victorian Health Building Authority and the Victorian State Government.
