Simulation for Safer Imaging: A Monash Health Collaborative Initiative

The Monash Health Simulation team has collaborated with the Monash Health Imaging team to develop and deliver a unique interdisciplinary simulation based education program. Focusing on the unique perspective of the Diagnostic Imaging staff comprising of Medical Imaging Technologists, Diagnostic Imaging nursing staff and Radiology medical staff, the course is designed to meet the learning needs of imaging professionals caring for Monash Health patients.

Focusing on aspects of the Monash Health Serious Adverse Patient Safety Events (SAPSE) top five domains of diagnostic excellence, compliance with policies and procedures, improving clinical communication, escalation and senior decision making, and recognition and response to deterioration, the course, held at the Monash Health Simulation Centre moved through a series of workshops, discussions, exploration of crisis resource management strategies and engaging clinical simulations.

The co-design of the course enabled the Imaging faculty to bring their expertise and experience in the imaging education domain to provide a frame from the perspective of the imaging participants across the five Monash Health imaging sites. With different imaging modalities, various designs of the clinical space and multiple campuses that Diagnostic Imaging staff work across, it was an opportunity for participants to reflect on how they might implement their learnings acquired at Monash Simulation and take them back to their clinical space to optimise the care that they deliver to Monash Health patients.

The collaborative effort and bespoke course design further reinforces the collaboration that Monash Simulation can offer Monash Health Units to deliver simulation-based education across Monash Health with specific learner needs.

Reflections from our course participants related to the learner focused simulation education experience include “the importance of clear communication and delineation of roles amongst team members” and satisfaction of “being able to attend an Imaging focused workshop [with] relatable scenarios.”

Monash Simulation and Monash Imaging look forward to our ongoing collaboration with this course available for participants to book in the future.
