Beyond the Code: Debriefing That Makes a Difference

The team at Monash Simulation were delighted to host the third Clinical Event Debriefing Course on the 22nd July. This hands-on, simulation-rich experience was designed to support critical care staff in navigating the complex conversations that follow serious clinical events such as cardiac arrest.

Delivered at Monash Health’s Victoria Heart Hospital, the course blends theory, interactive workshops, and high-fidelity simulations using live actors, recreating the high-pressure dynamics of difficult conversations.

The most recent course welcomed a strong cohort of nurses from the VHH Cath Lab, whose insights and experience brought richness and authenticity to the day. Their presence reinforced the importance of interprofessional debriefing. Participants were trained in the skills necessary for safe, structured, and psychologically supportive debriefing in the workplace. With the CLEAR framework, participants learned strategies for managing difficult debriefs and follow-up actions after the debrief, with the shared goal of improving how we reflect, learn, and recover after challenging clinical experiences.

Monash Simulation plays a vital role in supporting departments across Monash Health by offering tailored education programs that respond to real-world clinical needs.
