Madalena Liu is a consultant Urological Surgeon practising in General Urology (males and females) with a subspecialty interests in complex voiding difficulties/incontinence, urodynamics and pelvic reconstructive surgery.

Upon graduating with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from The University of Melbourne in 1994, she commenced her basic surgical training at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne whereby she was rotated to various surgical specialty units and regional hospitals to gain a broad range of experiences in general and specialty surgical practices.

Prior to pursuing Urological Surgical training and with the support of scholarships from the University of Melbourne, the Australian Kidney Foundation and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, she embarked on full-time research at F Douglas Stephens Laboratory, Royal Children’s Hospital, now Murdoch Children’s Institute under the supervision of Professor John Hutson, who is well known internationally for his research in paediatric surgical diseases, particularly in the field of undescended testes. Her thesis titled “ New insights into bladder development and pathophysiology of bladder outflow obstruction and sensory denervation” was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Melbourne in 2002. Her research has been presented at international scientific meetings and published at peer review journals. The time spent pursuing her doctorate degree enabled her to develop an interest in conditions involving the bladder. It also taught her to develop an interest and enjoy tackling the more challenging clinical problems in her current practice.

After completing her advanced Urological Surgical training in Victoria, she was admitted as a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2005. She then travelled overseas to pursue post-fellowship training. She undertook further Uro-oncological training focusing on prostate and bladder cancer at The Prostate Centre at Vancouver General Hospital, University of British Columbia. This was followed by a formal clinical fellowship training in Voiding Dysfunction, Urodynamics and Reconstructive Surgery under at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University of Toronto.

Upon her return to Melbourne from post-fellowship training in Canada, she took up appointments at Monash Health and at various private hospitals located in the eastern and southeastern areas of Melbourne. She enjoys teaching junior doctors and medical students and is involved with clinical examinations at the College of Surgeons. She is passionate about providing the highest quality service for both male and female patients with bladder and pelvic floor disorders who require her area of expertise.

Miss Liu can conduct medical consultations in Mandarin and Hakka ( a Chinese dialect). She also speaks passable French and Portuguese.
