Endoscopy FAQs for GPs
Do all referred patients need to be assessed by a Gastroenterologist prior to a procedure?

Yes. Given the large number of referrals and the complexity of many patients, each patient has a consultation with a Gastroenterology doctor at one of our clinics. This may be via Telehealth. Detailed referrals with results, medications and contact details assist us in appropriately categorizing each patient.

Is there a long waiting list?

Due to the large volume of referrals, each patient is categorized as 1, 2 or 3.  Category 1 patients are expected to have their procedure  4-6 weeks after consultation.  Less urgent procedures are scheduled for 3-12 months after consultation.

Will I receive a report for my Practice records?

Yes.  Monash Health Endoscopy utilizes Provation for reports (including photos) which in addition to EMR (Electronic Medical Record), has significantly assisted effective communication with our referring GPs.

If I have a very urgent request/question, who can I talk too?

Our dedicated Endoscopy Registrar or Fellow are available if same-day information/assistance is required. They can be contacted via switchboard on 95946666.

Do you automatically arrange recall dates for surveillance procedures?

We are unable to provide this service given the number of patients this would involve.  Advice is given and documented on each procedure report with the expectation that the patient is re-referred for the surveillance procedure (for example in 5 years’ time.)

Do you inform the NBCSP of results?

Yes.  For all procedures performed as part of NBCSP, the required data is completed.

Do you arrange a follow-up consultation after each procedure?

Any patient with significant findings requiring Specialist assistance will be followed up.  Most patients however do not require this, but are encouraged to see their GP within two weeks.

Our Emergency Departments are experiencing extreme demand. If your condition is urgent but not a medical emergency, please consider alternative care options.Learn more
