The Clinical Gait Analysis Service (CGAS) based at the Kingston Centre in Cheltenham, is a diagnostic service that provides detailed information relating to an individual’s walking pattern.
The CGAS multi-disciplinary clinical team consists of a rehabilitation physician, an orthotist, physiotherapists experienced in gait analysis and biomechanists. The team provides a comprehensive assessment of walking including:
- Medical assessment (if required)
- Physical examination
- Split screen video analysis
- 3-dimensional motion analysis providing kinematics and kinetics +/- EMG
- Spatiotemporal information using an instrumented walkway
The team will determine if a 3-dimensional assessment is required or if the instrumented walkway will provide sufficient information.

- Make recommendations to the referrer for intervention
- Promote the best outcome for the client
- Deliver an interdisciplinary service with staff committed to continuous improvement
- Be committed to ongoing research into the area of human mobility
Eligibility criteria
All referrals will be reviewed by the CGAS Manager to ensure that assessments are appropriate to the client’s needs. The following admission criteria are recommended:
- For walkway testing clients must be:
- Able to walk 50-60m, with a minimum of 10m at a time, with or without a gait aid or assistance
- Able to cooperate with the assessment
- Of good health on the day of the assessment
- For 3-dimensional analysis the following criteria must also be met:
- At least 16 years of age
- Minimum speed of 50cm/second
- Able to walk 100-200m
- Able to stand for 5-10 minutes at a time
Cost
- The cost for one assessment is $1344 (If EMG requested cost will be $1814)
- The cost for two assessments is $2016
