Celebrating 15 years of artistic expression by mental health carers

In May, Monash Health officially launched My Family Carer Art Book – a celebration of 15 years of the health service’s annual Mental Health Program Art Competition.

The book features a diverse range of artistic expression by carers, families and supporters of consumers receiving mental health care.

It is a powerful collection of creative works that reflect the voices, experiences and resilience of families and carers in our community.

The works featured range from watercolours and oil paintings to photography and pencil drawings.

Over five workshops, Community Advisors carefully selected the inspiring and thought-provoking pieces to be featured.

Co-design was taken on by Consumer & Family Carer Consultants from the Mental Health Program.

‘The key messages from the book are about creative expression, self-discovery and empowerment through art,’ explained Franca Bywater, Senior Family Carer Consultant in Consumer and Family Carer Services.

The art is paired with the thoughts and reflections of those who contributed.

One contributor, Helen, a family carer, shared how joining art classes 20 years ago had a profound impact on her wellbeing.

‘I thought, how can I do art? …. but I built up the courage to do so. Being there with people in the same or similar situations was beneficial as we could all relate to each other. Most of all, being me in the present moment of making art gave me a sense of true peace,’ Helen reflected.

The book also features photographs taken from family and carer engagement events – moments of connection that support wellbeing and help build a strong, compassionate community.
