Clinical trials advancing human health thanks to clinicians and patients

Across Monash Health, we have 570 clinical trials currently in progress, running across more than 30 departments.

We’d like to take a moment to recognise the incredible work and dedication of our clinical researchers. Their tireless efforts are advancing human health study by study, patient by patient, in communities here and around the world.

But our progress would not be possible without the patients who volunteer to take part in these trials, putting their trust in our people and our processes.

One such inspiring story is that of *Emily’s, who was diagnosed earlier this year with a very aggressive form of bile duct cancer – metastatic biliary tract carcinoma.

Despite being previously fit and healthy, the 58-year-old mother of 2, was found to have blockage of her bile duct from a routine liver function test, leading to the life-altering diagnosis with a very limited life expectancy.

Emily was offered an opportunity to enrol in a clinical trial to treat her cancer. Initially, she had reservations about participating, as she would like to focus more on quality of life rather than quantity. However, with the support of her young adult children, siblings, and the Oncology research team, she decided to take a leap of faith.

The multi-centre trial, which aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new combination of targeted therapy and immunotherapy in subtype of advanced biliary tract cancers, is led by Associate Professor Zee Wan Wong, Director of Oncology at Monash Health.

Emily has tolerated and responded very well to the trial treatment so far, with her latest CT scan showing a significant reduction in the tumour.

‘I’m glad I took part as I feel I contributed to science. I would strongly recommend anyone reading my story to never give up and always keep on fighting,’ she said.

‘If you have the opportunity to join a clinical trial, give it a shot.’

Emily’s story is a testament to the relentless efforts of researchers and medical professionals who work tirelessly to push the boundaries of medical science

‘Patients like Emily who place their trust in their cancer care providers allow us to conduct clinical trials in search of better treatment options. This trial is one of two hundred oncology clinical trials currently active at Monash Health, many of which offer patients novel cancer therapies and hope towards a better outcome with their cancer diagnoses,’ said A/Prof Wong.

‘Their courage to navigate the uncertainties of being on trial medications is admirable, as is their commitment to comply with the requirements within the clinical studies.’

We want to convey our heartfelt thanks to all our patients who participated in clinical trials. To Emily for sharing her story, thank you, and we wish her all the best in her cancer journey.

Her story is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience required to face life’s challenges, and the hope that clinical trials can offer to those battling cancer.
