Monash Health intern advances paediatric urology research

Dr Eliza Szwarcberg, a medical intern at Monash Children’s Hospital, is making an impact with her research on the use of intravesical Botox injections in children with functional urinary incontinence.

Dr Szwarcberg, who graduated from Monash University last year, has been working closely with Consultant Paediatric Urologist Associate Professor Kiarash Taghavi and Head of Paediatric Urology and Paediatric Surgery Associate Professor Chris Kimber on this innovative study.

Dr Szwarcberg’s research focuses on over 140 children who received Botox injections to better understand the safety and side effect profile of the procedure.

‘Overall, it is a safe treatment with very few complications, where the Botox is injected into the bladder muscle to help it relax,’ she explained.

The study also delved into the use of Botox for giggle incontinence, a rare condition where children experience significant incontinence episodes with laughter.

This pioneering research is the first to specifically address giggle incontinence and has shown very promising results.

‘Our work has been presented at the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons conference and is planned for presentation at the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons and European Society of Paediatric Urology meetings later this year,’ Dr Szwarcberg noted.

The team plans to continue exploring the efficacy of Botox in other specific patient demographics, aiming to further enhance the treatment options available for children with urinary incontinence.

A/Prof Taghavi said Dr Szwarcberg’s work has been impactful. Her research offers hope and improved quality of life for many young patients.

‘She has made a great contribution, with incredible dedication, work ethic, and organisation,’ he said.

Congratulations to Dr Szwarcberg on her wonderful achievement!
