At Monash Health, we are proud to provide exceptional care and support to mothers and their newborns. Our dedicated team of midwives plays a crucial role in this journey, guiding families from the early stages of pregnancy through to the joyous moment of meeting their baby for the first time. In the video below, you will hear firsthand from Hannah Oppy, Midwife Manager at Monash Medical Centre, about her experiences.Â

Monash Health is one of Victoria’s largest health services and we deliver over 10,000 babies per year. My favorite part of the job is seeing the joy on parents’ faces when they first get to meet their babies. We have quite a journey with them from the beginning of pregnancy right through to visiting them at home. But it’s when they finally get to meet these little people that they’ve been growing and caring about for so long that is really special.Â
It’s an incredible profession because you can educate right from the very beginning about pregnancy. You can build wonderful rapport with these women and really provide them a holistic approach to their labor, birth, and parenting. We like to provide lots of really solid education for them to go home with so that they’re empowered and confident to look after their babies.Â
Monash Health services the largest growth corridor in Victoria, which means we’re going to see more and more families come through and even more and more babies. The benefit of having such a large health service with Monash Health and multiple different sites means that for women, we can streamline their care. If they all of a sudden become complicated and require more high-level tertiary care, we can easily transfer them to our site at Monash Medical Centre, which means no having to go between different health services. It makes it seamless and safe for the women to transfer easily between sites.Â
What’s unique about Monash Health is that we offer such a diverse range of opportunities for midwives. I have worked at Monash Medical Centre since 2011, where I started my nursing graduate year. I did the graduate program and then progressed into the neonatal intensive care unit, and later became a midwife within Monash Health.Â
We recruit a lot of our new midwives through our graduate midwifery program. In terms of new recruits, we love recruiting new midwives from other services and overseas. Part of what I love about being a midwife at Monash Health is the supportive team. They’re friendly, and it’s a home away from home, so it’s like having a second family. Even though you’re at work, you feel like you’re at home. If you’re a midwife looking to expand your career, I think Monash Health is a great place to be.Â
