Monash Health Webinar: Empowering Parents and Professionals to Tackle Vaping Risks

A free webinar about understanding vaping, is one of several initiatives the Monash Health’s Health Promotion and Smoke Free teams are implementing to address the rates of smoking and vaping in our community.

Featuring Co-Founder and Director of Drug Education Australia, Sharon Torpey, the upcoming Understanding Vaping webinar aims to provide valuable insights into vaping trends, and associated risks, along with practical strategies to support young people in making informed choices.

Monash Health, in collaboration with Quit Victoria, City of Greater Dandenong, City of Casey, and Cardinia Shire Council, is hosting the webinar dedicated to educating parents and professionals about the growing concern of vaping and equipping them with effective communication strategies to address the potential risks with their young people.

Monash Health employees, families and friends are invited to register and attend the webinar on Tuesday 6 June.

Statistics from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation reveal that in Australia approximately 14 per cent of 12 to 17-year-olds have experimented with e-cigarettes, and a concerning 32 per cent of these students have used them in the past month.

On 2 May, Australian Minister for Health Mark Butler announced a vaping reform to prohibit vaping products’ sale, supply, and recreational use while still allowing access for those who rely on them for medical purposes.

It is already illegal to sell vaping products to individuals under the age of 18 years. However, the challenge lies in effectively educating, regulating and monitoring this reform. According to recent data from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, most students who use e-cigarettes acquire them from friends (63 per cent), while 12 per cent purchase them themselves, and 8 per cent obtain them from siblings.

The Victorian Smoking and Health Survey conducted by Cancer Council Victoria’s Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer, funded by VicHealth, reveals that young Victorians aged 18-30 years comprise the most significant proportion of current e-cigarette users (54 per cent).

Join this free online webinar on Tuesday, 6 June at 7pm. It offers an invaluable opportunity to gain knowledge, guidance, and the tools necessary to effectively tackle the issue of vaping among young individuals.
