TeamKids Berwick Fields is a Vic Kids Eat Well star

Kavita Jagtap is the director of TeamKids Berwick Fields, the outside school hours care (OSHC) at Berwick Fields Primary School. She has been instrumental in championing health and wellbeing and nutritious foods using the free Vic Kids Eat Well initiative.

With local health promotion support from our team, Kavita completed 5 Vic Kids Eat Well small bites in 2024 by gradually making tweaks to the daily menu and cooking activities, including:

  • Providing milk and alternatives for breakfast and afternoon tea – offering milk with water each day and a variety of dairy and alternatives, including cheese, yoghurt and, more recently, fruit smoothies, thanks to a Vic Kids Eat Well appliance voucher
  • Making breakfast a healthy start to the day – using low-sugar breakfast cereals and wholemeal bread
  • Making healthy foods and drinks the stars of the curriculum – boosting nutritious and tasty options for the cooking club and exploring foods from around the world, e.g. sushi, Japanese pancakes, butter chicken, burritos and more
  • Offering healthier snacks – swapping corn chips for homemade pita chips and phasing out pastry-based items
  • Providing healthy food and drinks at most events and outings – offering lots of fruits and vegetables, including platters and savoury muffins.

In addition to championing Vic Kids Eat Well at TeamKids Berwick Fields and ensuring the menu aligns with Vic Kids Eat Well and the Victorian Food and Drink Guidelines for OSHC, Kavita personally invited several other TeamKids services in the area to participate in the Vic Kids Eat Well initiative.

Kavita’s passion and dedication to children’s health and well-being were recognised at our 2024 Monash Health Health Promotion Awards, where she won the local OSHC Award.
