The Alternate Leisure Initiative Pilot Project Summary

We’re excited to share the completion of the pilot project for The Alternate Leisure Initiative, which began in 2020 to fill gaps in our active living work.

Background

An ethics-approved research project aimed to develop and pilot strategies to remove barriers to participation in non-traditional physical activities, termed ‘alternate leisure’. These activities offer fun, playful, and socially engaging opportunities and include settings like dance studios, trampoline centres, children’s play centres, children’s farms, ten-pin bowling centres, arcades, water parks, go-karting tracks, aerial studios, and rock-climbing centres.

Pilot Participation

Four businesses participated: a dance studio, an aerial studio, a children’s farm, and a children’s play centre. They focused on either healthy eating or inclusion, implementing 51 combined healthy changes to create positive environments, cultures, and communities. Research found these settings to be safe, fun, inclusive, and supportive of social connections, health, and well-being.

Support and Impact

VicHealth funded the Incentive Voucher Program, which provided community members with free or low-cost activity access. 300 vouchers were distributed to at least 126 individuals, prioritising populations in need. This initiative enabled families and children to try new and affordable physical activities, enhancing their physical, emotional, and social health.

Future Plans

We’re thrilled to announce the expansion of The Alternate Leisure Initiative to other businesses/services within the City of Greater Dandenong, City of Casey, and Cardinia Shire. We will also explore new funding streams to continue the Incentive Voucher Program.
