Nurse Practitioners at Monash Health

The Nurse Practitioner program within Monash Health commenced in July 2004. With the support of the Nursing & Midwifery Executive Leadership Team (NMELT) at Monash Health, new Nurse Practitioner roles have been developed.  We have endorsed Nurse Practitioners in the areas of:

  • Chronic Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Emergency
  • Mental Health / Eating Disorders
  • Nephrology
  • Oncology

At Monash Health we currently have Nurse Practitioner candidates in the following clinical areas:

  • Chronic Disease
  • Mental Health
  • Nephrology
  • Neonatology
  • Paediatric Oncology

Monash Health are developing further Nurse Practitioner roles in the areas of:

  • Aged Palliative Care
  • Gerontology
  • Mental Health
  • Paediatric Oncology/Palliative Care
  • Pain Management

Uniquely within Monash Health the Nursing & Midwifery Executive Leadership Team (NMELT) has recognised the important contribution made by Nurse Practitioners and acknowledges that Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Practitioner candidate (NP/NPC) roles have shared objectives and challenges.  For these reasons Monash Health supports monthly meetings held by the NP/NPC group.  These meetings enable:

  • Collaborate approaches to overcoming the challenges common to these pioneering roles
  • Sharing of innovations for the role across specialty areas
  • Mentorship
  • Review of and contribution to NP/NPC documents & processes
  • Professional development and education
  • Opportunities for research
  • Reporting NP/NPC activities
  • Development of a clinical internship
